Matthew Bourne on Swan Lake’s Legacy
Reflecting on the production’s incredible journey, Matthew Bourne said:
“It’s hard to believe our Swan Lake is now 30 years old, and even more astonishing that we are now casting Swans and Princesses who weren’t even born when the show premiered! Many dancers have grown up dreaming of performing in this production, so I’m particularly excited to introduce this line-up of young performers.”
“Many of these dancers have been nurtured through our talent development programme's at New Adventures, especially Swan School. I know firsthand what a life-changing experience this show has been for previous casts and how it has inspired new audiences worldwide. I’m thrilled to welcome this next generation of Swans and Swan-watchers as we celebrate three decades of Swan Lake.”
A Bold, Thrilling, and Genre-Defining Classic
Renowned for shattering ballet traditions, this thrilling, bold, witty, and deeply emotive production is best known for replacing the traditional female corps-de-ballet with an all-male ensemble, creating a powerful and unforgettable reinterpretation of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece.
Since its premiere at Sadler’s Wells in 1995, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake has captivated audiences worldwide, becoming the longest-running full-length dance classic in both the West End and on Broadway.
