Despite brain tumour's killing more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease – a statistic the

NatWest team is determined to help change.

To raise both funds and awareness, staff at the Milton Keynes branch rolled up their sleeves for a cake bake and joined the national ‘Wear A Hat Day’ campaign, donning their most eye-catching head-wear to spark conversations and raise vital donations.

One of the driving forces behind the fundraising efforts is Gary Johnson, Relationship Director in Milton Keynes, who launched the initiative to mark 40 years with NatWest on 8th May 2025. With 40 days to go until that milestone, he set out to raise money with a theme of £40 donations, linking in with Wear a Hat Day on 28th March. But Gary didn’t stop there – he also embarked on a fun and engaging "hat tour", visiting customers, snapping photos in hats, sharing them on social media and encouraging donations. “This is where the majority of the fundraising came from,” he said. “But I want to make it clear – this isn’t about me. It’s about supporting an incredible cause that deserves far more attention and funding.”

Julie Turness, NatWest Milton Keynes Branch Manager, and her in-branch team also threw their full support behind the cause, helping organise and promote the Wear A Hat Day activity in-branch, adding to the positive buzz and generous donations from customers.

Julie said: “Brain tumour's are a devastating disease, and it’s simply unacceptable that research is so underfunded. We’re proud to support Brain Tumour Research and do our bit to help find a cure. Every pound raised brings us one step closer.”

Brain Tumour Research funds dedicated Centre's of Excellence across the UK, striving to improve outcomes for patients and ultimately find a cure. NatWest’s local fundraising efforts form part of a wider movement across the country to support this life-saving work.
